Packraft Fly Fishing - Middle Fork Feather River
Introduction to Packraft Fly Fishing with the Truckee Trout Fly Fishers!
Lost Sierra Fly Guide - Packrafting Floats - Middle Fork Feather River Oct 2024
TTFF and Lost Sierra Fly Guide did three Packraft Floats on the Middle Fork Feather River in mid-October and the trips lived up to their reputations!
All of the participants were 1st time packrafters but we got right to work catching fish and learning the ropes of Packraft Fly Fishing. Our first group was Bill and Bob and floated the lower canyon down to Redbridge. The fishing was hot right at the put-in and we had a great day catching fish on the tight line nymphing, dry dropper, and stripping streamers! We did have some flooded waders at the end of day one, with a rapid that might have flipped one of our participants.
Our second trip started out at 46 degrees and raining, but we decided to keep our date and make the best of it. Vick and Peter were troopers and after a slow start to the morning, the fish started hitting the net! Vic landed the first and last fish of the day. Tight line nymphing, dry dropper, and stripping streamers as usual. Despite the weather, the fishing was great, we had lots of takes on the streamer and overall, it was another fantastic day of fly fishing on the Middle Fork Feather River.
On our 3rd trip, we had another change in weather with temps dropping significantly in the previous days. With a slow start, we scratched our heads caught a few fish, and enjoyed the amazing Fall weather.
Greg and Dan got the hang of the rafts and we enjoyed the remote float of the lower canyon. Towards the end of the day, the bite picked up and in the last hour, we lost count of how many fish we were catching, back to "normal" for the Middle Fork Feather River!
We had an outstanding time adventuring in the backcountry, floating remote sections of the river, catching wild rainbow trout, and learning the tricks of Packraft Fly Fishing, thanks for coming out!
