The North Fork Yuba River

Rising from the Sierra Crest about 8 miles northwest of Sierraville the North Yuba River flows west through meadows, then south into a gorge, turning west again, following the historic gold rush highway, California State Route 49. This “gorge” section is known for its deep gold mining history and magical waters and is Designated Wild Trout Section. Fly fishing in this part of the Tahoe National Forest is a real treat. The cold snow-melt waters are bright in color and plentiful in fish! A true fly fishing destination.

In addition to its rugged beauty, the North Yuba River is stacked with lots of fish so it is a great river to learn how to fly fish on or book a quick trip to get on the river and onto some fish!

The North Yuba River fishes best in the early summer into Late Fall. Deep pocket water and easy access from HWY 49 make this a fun and simple river to fish. During the summer months, the river sees a lot of folks down by the river relaxing and hanging out which limits the fishing for sure. Finding some of the lesser-known spots is key during the warm months. The majority of this river is on US Forest Service Land so hiring a Permitted Guide is key! Matt is permitted to guide this river from Sierra City down to Goodyears Bar.

• Fish - Lots of Fish! Smaller to medium-sized Rainbow Trout and a few Brown Trout here and there. Easy access to the North Fork Yuba River from Highway 49. Just use the pull-outs!

  Lots of great spots, dry dropper rigs, dry fly, and nymphing all work well on the North Fork of the Yuba River.

• Sections - Sierra City down river to Goodyears Bar, Pocket Water at the top, and deep pools down on the lower sections

• Highlights - Sierra City and Downieville, Historic Gold Rush Towns offering world-class mountain biking, amazing local resorts and restaurants. The area is a great place to visit for the full family.
