Fly Fishing Guide Matt McCourtney

Matt McCourtney (Johnsville CA) Owner, and head guide is a Wilderness First Responder, Photographer | Videographer, Backcountry Fly Fishing Guide, and Whitewater Certified Rafting Guide!

Matt is a true backcountry enthusiast. He loves exploring, challenging himself, and discovering intellectual beauty in rugged places. Matt is passionate about developing and sharing outdoor adventures with others. He loves digging into Maps routing his next adventure and exploring new places. Rafting, Mountain Biking, Bikepacking, Moto, Hiking Backcountry Skiing, he is usually out there.  In addition to owning and operating his Photography and Fly Fishing Guiding Business, Matt is an Executive Board Member for the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship a nonprofit dedicated to the restoration and revitalization of rural mountain towns in the Northern Region of the Sierra Mountain Range, The Lost Sierra. Come out on and enjoy this amazing place!

Matt grew up on the water…. alongside his father fishing for the last 40 years. Combining his never-ending need to explore and push further, he has found himself in places that just do not see a lot of people. The deep woods, the mountains, long lost mining trails, steep canyon-walled rivers, and everything in between. Fly fishing in these places is such a remarkable escape from the everyday life, traffic jams, cell phones, social media the overwhelming pace in which, we now live our lives.

He sets out on his adventures to leave it all behind and find the true meaning of life; simplicity and the pursuit of it. While exploring these places Matt has a deep respect for the land, the animals and nature around him.

A true steward of the land, practicing sustainability, respect and honor of these amazing outdoor spaces.

Living in a small “Ghost Town” in the Lost Sierra, Matt is stoked to show you his home water, and the places he fishes in his “backyard”. The Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River and its tributaries…. The North Yuba River, small creeks, and hidden gems all along the way…..

In addition to being a fly fishing guide, Matt has been a commercial photographer for the last 20 years. Capturing everything from sprawling fancy mansions, hip fashion, trendy food and wine and his personal favorite, backcountry landscapes.

A fly fishing trip with Matt will be more than just another day on the river, rather an adventure, but a fishing trip with beautifully captured images for you to remember for a lifetime.

Brown Trout on the Middle Fork Feather River

Associate Guide “Z” Silver (Sloat CA) - Z is the kind of guy who walks up to the river and usually catches the biggest fish on the first few casts.

His ability to read his surroundings is unmatched and his passion for the outdoors is contagious! Z brings a uniquely local way of looking at the Lost Sierra Waters and he personally fishes in less traditional ways, but it usually pays off!

A day on the water with Z is always an adventure, whether you are a beginner or lifelong angler chasing trophy Wild and Brown Trout, “Z” is the man!

He is also my best adventure buddy. Reliable, trustworthy, and a solid human.
